Direct mail can be beneficial to building recognition and success for your business.

Here are 5 key factors to keep in mind when getting started:

1. DEFINE YOUR GOAL. Be clear on what your objective is. Are you introducing a new product or service? Having a blowout sale? Opening a new location, or do you simply want to new sales?
2. TARGET YOUR  AUDIENCE. Whether it's building off your current customer base or purchasing a mailing list, make sure you put yourself in front of the right people.
3. MAKE AN OFFER. And then make sure it's worth their time as well as yours.
4. FOLLOW THROUGH. Reward responses with a bonus or free sample to build loyalty. For example, if someone comes to your shop and buys as a result of  your mailing, send them a follow-up thank you offer.
5. REPEAT, REPEAT. It's more effective to send three postcards to 1000 people than to send one mailer to 3000. Not only does this increase the odds of responses, but builds recognition as well.
